Recently re-watched this 1941 Universal classic, and I have to say I'd take this over the 2010 remake with Del Toro and Hopkins in it any day.
Yeah the newer one had updated graphics and what not. But it was missing the atmosphere that made the original a horror classic.
Larry Talbot(the wolfman) didn't want to hurt anyone. He was a victim, just like his victims became. Great film, and a sad ending for a gentle man that was cursed to kill against his will. If you see it on TCM or something one night, you should really give it a watch. Great film, and the definition of classic horror.
Please give your opinion if you've seen it.

if i had to choose between the remake and the original wolfman, the original would win hands down.
i watched the 1941 wolfman just before christmas. it brought back memories of when i used to watch it as a kid.

That's a great movie too. And, you're right. They don't make them like this any more. It's a shame.

Lon Chaney Jr. IS the Wolf Man. Just as Boris Karloff IS Frankenstein's Monster, and Bela Lugosi IS Dracula (or Max Schreck IS Nosferatu, but that's going outside the Universal movie monsters realm).
I have such a love for the classic Universal movie monsters that . . . I don't know. It just makes me happy whenever they're mentioned. Especially those Frankenstein movies.
Now, I love Lawrence Talbot as a character, but I'm not that big a fan of this movie. I definitely prefer it over the remake, but of the classic Wolf Man movies I prefer Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, to be honest. An American Werewolf in London is my favorite werewolf movie, but that's getting off topic.
So, yeah. Lawrence Talbot is a tragic character worth its weight in gold, but, I don't know, I'm not too floored by this movie. I love Claude Rains, but I don't know if he should have played the father. I didn't believe the relationship the first time I saw it. Walter Huston might have been a better choice.
I do love Maleva in this and the inclusion of Bela Lugosi as well as, again, Talbot as a character, but, yeah. That's my two cents for now.

I love the classic Universal monster movies, with The Wolfman being my favorite. I've seen them all so many times, going all the way back to Creature Feature on Saturday nights with Count Gore De Vol when I was a kid.
Just love the sets and it's still amazing to me seeing what they could do makeup wise back then. I love Lon Chaney Jr. as Talbot and I always feel bad for him, just like I do the monster in Frankenstein. The entire catalogue of the classic Universal monster movies is great, but if I had to pick a favorite it'd be The Wolfman for sure.
I never got into the Abbot and Costello meeting the various monsters movies. I remember them showing occasionally as a kid and would always just go to bed disappointed. I don't know, just never got into them. My sister loved them though.
