No other movie, for me, any way, can beat the masterpiece that is Carpenter's The Thing. Everything about it is great. The setting. The location. The ensemble. The terror. The effects. The list goes on and on. No wonder the '11 one failed. It had no chance. It was following a magnum opus. As for the original, it's too wooden. Too bland. Not bad exactly, by any means, but a product of its 1950s values and sensibilities. Plus, there isn't a real good paranoia within it since the monster isn't replicating members of the scientific team but rather just James Arness in a costume.
Carpenter all the way.
