I liked both of them, though it's been a while since I've seen either. If I had to pick, I'd go with the original, just for what I thought was such a good premise. Leave it to the US film makers to steal another good movie from overseas.
So, original for me. Which one you guys like better?

I'll probably never bother with the remake. The original is one of my favorites . . . if nothing else, the last 5 minutes or so I consider to be some of the scariest minutes ever in a horror film. Seriously.

The remake isn't bad at all, but sticking with the original.

Shutter is one of the most creative horror movies I've seen. It's absolutely fascinating. However, I find the American version to be quite lacking because it removes the things that made the original Thai movie coherent and scary.
In general, I find that Americans don't know how to do these sorts of horror movies, so when they adapt it for an American audience, they take out the subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) nuances that make the movie what it is. Unfortunately it's been years since I've seen the American version (and I don't anticipate seeing it any time in the near future) so I can't point out specific instances. But it just didn't make sense because the things they edited were the things that made it scary.

I've never seen these? The originals always tend to be better but when they redo them for the american audience they chop a lot out.. wonder if its due to wanting a theater release and getting an approved rating?

Lol, I would say that's exactly why they do it. I've also enjoyed a lot of the US remakes of some Asian films. Liked The Grudge and The Ring. Liked the originals too, but these are pretty good quick horror fixes that are scary. To me anyway.

I'm not sure how the rating system works and how it effects the films ability in being released in theaters... I only became aware of this when rob zombie was trying to release his film 31, when it came out that the film was delayed multiple times due to the film not making an R rating thus not being allowed in theaters. When i heard that i wanted to see the film more then ever expecting it to be just amazing, tried watching it a few months ago and couldn't get into it think i got 20 mins in before i shut it off... seems backwards to me in a horror film i enjoy seeing the gore the blood and the monster i also enjoy a very well done film where they hide this from you but as a horror fan i feel like i would enjoy a more extreme rating then a chopped up film

Still waiting for the unrated Evil Dead we were promised. Love to have the option of seeing it x rated if it enhances the movie.

Oh, geeze, did they rip off Shutter?
Okay, if you want to see Shutter, start with the original Thai version. If you jump into the American version and then watch the Thai, you're really going to be disappointed because the American version keeps the plot twist but deletes the little things that make the plot twist make sense.
And actually, I don't think they changed this movie for the rating. I think it's because the style and complexity of Asian horror movies doesn't meet the in-your-face desires of American horror movies. It is assumed that Americans don't watch horror movies to think. Unfortunately it means that for movies like Shutter, they complete butcher a work of art.

I like both versions, didn't think they ruined the American one, but definitely turned it down some.

They are good stuff my friend! I have the US version on disc and still like to watch it. Don't have the original, but have seen it a few times. I agree that it's better, more scary. But the US version is pretty good too.
Found the original on YouTube, adding it to the it's Movie Time thread!

Yeah, most American remakes of Asian movies toss out any sort of nuances in favor of cheap scares. They toss out whatever made the original eerie and whole. So, the original Thai movie, for me.
