Man, I'm shocked and very sad to have read this. Hanneman passed away this morning at around 11 from liver failure. Hanneman had suffered a spider bite almost two years ago that is thought to have led to him contracting necrotizing fasciitis, a flesh eating bacterial disease that he never recovered from. He had dropped out of touring with Slayer in 2011 to enter the hospital for treatment. Slayer frontman, singer/bassist Tom Araya, had said at the time that they would finish the tour with other guitarists and then wait for Hanneman to recover before moving forward with making or recording any new material. No word yet on the bands future, but I'm thinking this is probably it for them. Announcement on Slayer's site. Man, they have been such a part of my life since I was in my way early teens. I really regret that I was never able to see Hanneman live. I always wanted to, and always figured I'd just catch them the next time around. RIP Jeff Hanneman. Condolences to his family and friends.

Just found out this morning on Facebook. Not a huge fan of Slayer, but I did have a lot of respect for them being such pioneers and legends in metal. I remember going over to my friends house to hang out and drink to some metal, and Slayer would always end up on the playlist. Damn shame to hear this.

As a teen, I started on Motley Crue. Then we all kind of realized that the makeup and hairspray wasn't exactly what we were about, lol. So, a friend turned me on to Metallica in 83 and right after that we discovered Slayer and I've been a fan of both ever since. Don't know why I've seen Metallica so many times and never Slayer. And now Hanneman is gone. Big loss for metal for sure. When a lot of fans got turned off by Metallica and the Black album and the Load records, they still had Slayer to thrash to. Never got as big as Metallica, but they were the constant in metal. He'll definitely be missed.

This is sad. 49 is too young to die.

Agreed LDG. 49 is nothing nowadays. He still had so much left to do. At least he made his time here count. He'll be missed for sure.

There was a lot of unofficial speculation of him dying of liver failure, with a lot of folks not thinking it was attributed to the spider bite he suffered, but rather drinking. Hanneman was always a known partier and drinker, and some were saying he may have gotten so depressed about not being able to be with the band that he drank himself to death.
But, he was writing with the band and recovering slowly from the bite and bacterial infection hoping to release another album with the band later this year. They type of infection he had can lead to streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, which can cause liver failure. The fact that Hanneman ignored the spider bite for weeks until he knew something was wrong before seeking treatment didn't help.
It's not a condolence and doesn't bring him back, but I'm just pointing out that this is a very likely scenario for what happened. Doesn't matter in the long run, but this is for the ones out there saying the drinking caught up to him. If it was drinking that was the sole cause, I can think of many others that would have been gone way before him.

Lots of guy party hard, but I think the spider bite had a lot to do with it. That's what a lot of speculative reports are thinking anyway.

Some people just aren't built for drinking. He could have just given up after a while and stopped seeing doctors. Have seen it happen in my own family (albeit with a easily curable kidney infection, not liver failure).

I'll be waiting for an official report on this. I find it hard to believe the guy just gave up like that, but you never know.

They don't even know if there's going to be an autopsy since he died in the hospital. If not, I guess we'll never know for sure. I know we have Brown Recluse spiders all over in MD and up and down the coast and they will mess you up bad with their bite. Obviously they don't know what kind of spider bit him, but the effects point to the Brown Recluse. A bite from them needs to be treated immediately, and even then the effects are devastating. Could definitely kill someone if left untreated.

I heard rumors that those crazy bastards at the Westboro Church might try to protest his funeral. If they do, the fans in attendance there are going to beat the ish out of them. They better think that over REAL carefully.

Slayer fans are among the craziest out there, They'll even carve the name of the band onto their own bodies. Anyone crazy enough to do that to themself will surely have no issue doing worse to someone speaking ill of their beloved band.

Same here. I don't think anyone has fought them back before, but that would certainly not happen here. I'd read that article with a smile on my face.
