The book was much scarier than the movie, though I do love the movie.

Does it count if I say Goosebumps gave me nightmares as a kid?
Honestly though, The Mist by Stephen King scared the hell out of me. I wouldn't go near my window if there was heavy fog for a couple of months. Totally irrational but something about it made me want to hide in my bed forever.

Does it count if I say Goosebumps gave me nightmares as a kid? It does, because Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark scared the bejeebus out of me. That art, those stories. So glad I still have those books after all these years. Got them on my comic shelf, too. They belong there.

I used to have almost all of the books, but my mom sold them all in a huge bundle for $10 at a yard sale... I didn't even get the ten dollars.

... I am so sorry Mortem. No one should ever have to go through that. Scour goodwills and salvation army stores. You might be able to find them. I found a 20th Anniversary Edition of Scary Stories 1 with a sick foil cover to go with my original copies and it cost me less than a buck and it was brand new. And it was still the original art, too. You can find them if you look hard enough and often enough.

Mortem you could also try E-bay. Tons of them on there, this is just one of the auctions for them.

These days, although I still love 'em, it's hard for a book to actually *scare* a jaded old horror fan like me. However, there were two that came very close . . . if nothing else, there were moments within these two titles that gave me a serious case of the goosebumps
- THE KILLING KIND by John Connolly (the best "horror" writer who's not marketed as such) - THE CHILDREN'S HOUR by Douglas Clegg (probably my all-time favorite "vampire" novel . . . if it's even really a vampire novel)

Since I mainly read comics, I don't get scares like I used to. But a sad story can bum me the hell out for days, if not weeks, like Fury Max My War Gone By. That was a very rough read. Then again, it is Garth Ennis.
