I looked but couldn't find a thread for this. I apologize if I missed it . . . .
Any fans of DOCTOR SLEEP around? I was skeptical when I first heard King was writing a sequel to THE SHINING, even more skeptical when I read the synopsis (as it didn't do a whole lot for me), but then I read the book.
My God. It blew me away. I seem to be in the minority, but I think it's the best thing he's written in 20 years. I finished it, turned right around and read it a second time.

I haven't read it yet, but my wife did. She liked it, but she likes King's work. After your review, I guess I have to read it now. King, when he's on, is some of the best writing out there.

I just started reading Doctor Sleep. I'm 100 pages in, so far, so good. I understand this is being made into a movie, or did I miss it? Anyway, I'll return to discuss the book when I'm further in or done. Shine on Danny.

310 pages in, roughly at the halfway point. So far a decent read with few "jump moments" so it doesn't hit you over the head with a croquet mallet like the Shining. It is, however, full of promise of what's to come and steadily ramping up.
I won't lie, I feel a bit of nervous tension building in my gut like the pressure of an old boiler that hasn't been dumped. Where's Dick Hallorran when you need him? Tony, is that you? Careful Doc, things are getting dicey...

Ok, I finished the book and here's my opinion. You know how roller coaster rides begin with a very slow rise to the top and even though not much is happening you feel nervous anticipation in the pit of your stomach for what's to come? Doctor Sleep was a lot like that for me. A bit of a slow climb to the top and then BAM, crazy twists and turns and a sharp decent that happens so fast you can't believe it's over.
Not as relentlessly horrifying as The Shining, and I wouldn't rank it in King's top five books, but still a good read that left me satisfied. I will definitely see the movie now that I've read the book. I hope they do it justice.

Glad you liked it occupant. Hopefully the film is good. Seems like it's hit or miss with his books to movie translations, but some have been really good. Some, not so much. Pulling for a good one!

Me too endo. I hate when they screw up a good King novel with a bad adaptation or lousy casting. Fingers crossed.

I think the good ones outweigh the bad with him, most of the movies were pretty good. Some not so much, but overall good. As long as it's not like Cell. I didn't care for the book, and the movie was that much worse.
