I don't know about you guys, but man, I miss the VHS days. Remember going into every aisle of the local video store and just finding the most bizarre things in the world? Boxes that were colorful, creepy, and 8 times out of 10, better than the movie contained within it. Horror seemed to have it the best, and to this day many films have never seen a DVD release. Today, I bring you a film that never had a release AT ALL until a few years ago in this great box set! Without further delay, let us head into The Basement!
A mysterious cloaked entity known only as "The Sentinel" has summoned 4 people to a basement with him. Before he sends them off to their fiery fate, he shows each one of them the horrible things they have done to land themselves here.
Swimming Pool - A woman who is cheating on her husband discovers that there is a mysterious spirit in her swimming pool. In order to cover her tracks, she decides to dispose of the men she's seeing by feeding them to it.
Trick or Treat - A grumpy man who lives alone refuses to celebrate Halloween. He either ignores or is extremely rude to anyone who dares to ring his door bell asking for candy. A group of monsters invades his home to put a little holiday fear and spirit inside of him.
Zombie Movie - A sleazy film maker is doing a zombie film in the middle of nowhere, and does everything imaginable to try and cut the budget. Unfortunately for him, a group of real zombies wind up on the set and begin to feast on the cast and crew.
Home Sweet Home - A man moves into a cheap house, knowing that 6 years ago a series of murders and torture took place there. He thinks nothing of it, at least until the spirits inside the house show up later in the night!
This is low budget cinema at its finest! This is an old, lost film that has been thankfully restored for our viewing pleasure! Yes, the acting is awful. Yes, the film had no sound so it was dubbed in later, and it sounds really awkward at points. However, you can tell the people involved here really tried, and despite having no budget at all, put together a very good film! Some of the effects look really good, while others are quite awful, but this is part of the charm of a shot on video film.
The only complaint I really have is that the first story is a tad long and boring, but the rest of the film is EXCELLENT. Granted, I don't exactly have the most refined taste in the world, but if you are into low to no budget DIY type films, this, in my opinion, is one of the best. In fact, if you can, I would highly recommend getting yourself a copy of this set, as most of the films contained here are quite fun to watch, especially with a friend! I'll get to those others at some point, but for now, I'm just happy to share this little gem with you all.
