A mysterious naked woman (Scarlett Johansson) appears and steals clothes that she finds from a dead woman. She doesn't speak much, instead preferring to go around town and start conversations with random men where they do most of the talking. After a while, she begins to ask them if they would like to come with her to her place, where she strips and walks away, asking them to follow her. As they do, they become enveloped in a strange black goo which preserves their bodies. One night she comes across a disfigured man, and being that she isn't human, she asks him typical questions, and he is very surprised that she doesn't seem the least bit disturbed by his appearance. She initially is going to let him suffer the same fate, but something in her now feels different. and she decides to let him go free.
This sudden act of kindness however, causes the wrath of a man on a motorcycle with whom she seems to have some kind of business with. She gets hunted down, but eventually escapes, and meets another kind stranger in a diner who notices her strange behavior. He takes her home and the two have sex. Afterwards, she examines herself, and notices she's feeling much more things than when she arrived. What are these mysterious feelings? Is she slowly becoming more human? She doesn't have much time to figure this out though, because now more people are aware of her and want to hunt her down. Will she be able to cope with these new feelings and escape, or will she be hunted down and killed?
I absolutely HATED this movie. I thought I was going to get some kind of horror/sci fi hybrid with a bit of Cronenberg flair akin to the Fly or Eraserhead, but instead got stuck watching a boring and pretentious art film. Had I not been on a date, I would have left the theater before it finished because this was such a chore to sit through.
There were long, lingering shots on uninteresting things, the whole "Meet a guy, seduce him and trap him in black goo" routine was repeated far too many times, and the soundtrack was absolutely HEINOUS. Hell, I still don't know why Scarlett's character was trapping the guys in the black goo. According to an article I read before I saw the film, it was stated that she was capturing humans to be sold for food back on her home planet, but no such thing was ever stated in the film. It wasn't even hinted at. If I don't know why something is happening, how am I supposed to be invested and care?
This movie was a major bummer, and probably the biggest disappointment of all the things I saw in the theater that year. I know lots of people who like this, but I just don't get it. I mean, seeing Scarlett Johansson naked on the big screen was pretty awesome, but that doesn't make for a good film. Oh well, they can't all be winners, right?

The main complaint I've read about this movie is that it's boring. Some liked the artsy thing, some didn't. But even the ones that did said it dragged. I didn't know SJ was naked in it, that might be the best thing I've heard about it so far. Probably gonna skip this one.

Nice review. I've never seen it but I trust your judgement. There might be something else about it though... cause the opposite of coherent makes for interesting art too. sometimes something confusing is engaging. Was it just way too unintelligible and made no sense whatsoever?
