Steve Emory owns a video store in little place called Frenchtown. Business is pretty good, but he notices something that seems just a bit odd. While his store carries all manner of films, the ones that always seem to go out are extremely gory horror films. Just what is this town's obsession with violence anyway? Even a mother decides that renting the film Blood Cult is okay for her children since it doesn't contain any nudity. Dismemberment, fine? Boobs though? Clearly over the line!
One day Steve comes across a film that doesn't belong to the store. He decides to see what's on the tape, and is absolutely horrified at its contents. In it, a man who had supposedly left town some time back is brutally murdered while 2 guys make jokes about it! This is some seriously sick stuff! He decides to leave his assistant Rick in charge while he goes to the police to tell them about it. In his rush however, he forgets to bring the tape, so they go back to the store so he can show the sheriff the evidence. When they return though, Rick is nowhere to be found, and the tape has been replaced by one featuring a family gathering. How could this be?
After this, the sheriff dismisses this as a big hoax, saying that Steve has seen one too many horror films himself, and that Rick should turn up soon, probably having decided to just go home since he was left unsupervised. The next day Rick doesn't turn up, but another murder tape does, and it seems as if this is just the beginning of a series of snuff films. Steve gets no help from the cops, so he decides that he has to get to the bottom of this himself! Will he discover where the tapes are coming from and stop this sick show, or will he become just another victim on one of these video tapes?
This film is shockingly good! Most SOV films range from so bad they're good to flat out wretched, but this one is 100%, without a doubt, genuinely GOOD. I read that the director got the idea from this while actually working for a video store, even reenacting the event about the mother renting a horror film for her kids (though replace Blood Cult for I Dismember Mama). There's lots of cool references to other films in here too, and the story was definitely a cool one, especially with the whole rumor about snuff films still going strong at this time.
The acting is shockingly good, and the effects are very well done for being so low budget. This is absolutely the best SOV horror film I've ever seen, and if you are a fan of these types of films, or want to try out something different, I strongly recommend this one!

You and NDX recommended this to me a while back and I watched it and liked it a lot. I need to watch it again actually, I think it was like 2012 when I saw it. Agreed, good flick!

It's a great video, and is almost rivaled by Cannibal Campout for serious fun and characters.
