Microsoft is giving Windows 10, their newest operating system, away for free to folks that already have Windows 7 or 8. At first, I was thinking I like Windows 7 just fine, but the more I read about Windows 10, the more I want to try it out.
There's a free developmental download as well if you want to try it now, but I'm waiting until Microsoft says it's ready to go. Worst case scenario I hate it and re-install Windows 7. But, I'm kind of psyched about this. I love messing with new stuff, so when it's ready it will automatically download to my PC and notify me, then I can choose to install it whenever.
I know a lot of folks are if it's not broke don't mess with it, but this is supposed to have some serious security upgrades and is supposed to be much faster. Gonna try it out when the time comes and hopefully I'll like it. Anyone else going to try it? I mean it's the newest OS for free. Worth a try at least to me.

Hopefully it'll go smooth and not mess up anything I already have on my PC. Definitely gonna disconnect the external drive before installing it. Lot of stuff on that and it would suck if it got wiped somehow.

I'll wait until my IT boyfriend tries it out first. In the meantime, I couldn't be happier with Windows 8.

Here's how I look at it...with my eyes....oh man, someone get me a towel. But seriously, I have the Windows 7 disc that came with my PC, and if for whatever reason I don't like 10, I'll just reinstall. I know it's more complicated for some, but the increased security really has me liking this.

Hey, increased security is always a good thing. What bothers me though is that they totally skipped 9. I don't know why, but it just does. lol.

Supposedly it was to distance the company from Windows 8. From what I've read they considered that a failure and wanted to pass 9 and go right to 10. That was just a quick search, don't know how factual it is. My wife had Vista on her old laptop, and as much as people say that sucked, my wife or I never had a problem with it.

The icon just popped up on my computer today (after an update & restart) so I just reserved my copy of Windows 10. Though I'll be in OKC when it actually is available (Jul 29) so I'll be 1600 miles away from this computer... haha. Oh well. I guess that'll give the boyfriend time to test it out first anyway.
I'm not sure if it's going to be compatible for my work laptop though, it runs windows 7 still and I have to stay away from the IE update so that a program from one of the states I download from will continue to work properly (they refuse to update their system to be compatible with the latest IE browser version).

You can click the icon and it gives you more info, and tells you if it will work on your PC or laptop or if something needs upgraded. From what I've read everything you have installed now will work as it does now on the new OS. I'll have to see that to believe it, I can't believe there won't be something with compatibility issues. Anyway, I'll give it a shot. Hope it doesn't suck.

What if the icon doesn't even show up at all though? I read where you can check that, but that's after you already reserve your free copy, it seems. It's just not even showing up at all so that I can click to check it. I double checked and I am at least running the SP1 but still nothing. -shrugs- Anyway, it's not a big deal, Windows 10 will most likely screw things up on that laptop anyway and I'd rather not fix what isn't broken.

I though the icon was there for you though? It's there for me and tells me my PC is ready for 10, and that's hard to believe because my PC is a POS.

I though the icon was there for you though? It's there for me and tells me my PC is ready for 10, and that's hard to believe because my PC is a POS. I have 2 different laptops, one for personal use and one that was given to me for work, because my personal laptop was not able to downgrade to IE9 for one of the state's websites that requires that specific version of IE to operate properly. (when I bought the laptop, it already had Windows 8 and after talking with my boyfriend, he said it would raise security issues if I tried to downgrade IE, even though I never use IE on my personal anyway). So the icon isn't showing up at all for my work laptop, it's an old Sony VIAO that runs Windows 7 currently. Sorry, I might have not been as clear as I could have in my previous post.

That's weird. If it's running 7 it should be able to run 10, and if it finds it can't it should tell you what needs to be upgraded. Maybe you have to reserve a copy of 10 for each device, but I'm not sure on that.

Hm, well the only difference I can think of between the two laptops besides for the version is how I log in to each. My personal uses my microsoft account and work uses a local account (that's the one that doesn't have the icon).
But yeah, it is weird. lol. -shrugs-
