A downer ending isn't always a bad thing, it definitely is a shift from the norm. Things don't always end well in real life, so they shouldn't in a movie either.

The absolute best zombie film around, IMO. It started the whole sub-genre off. Moved away from voodoo zombies and full on flesh-eating zombies. Romero will always stand the test of time because of this as well as other things such as Creepshow and The Dark Half.
Ben is such a wonderful character. One of the best leads amongst horror.
The ending is . . . Yeah.
A movie everyone on here should watch if they haven't already. Just watch the right version, since it is in public domain, unfortunately.
One day I'll get the Criterion edition for my collection.

The Criterion is one of their better releases. I love it and I have 4 copies of this movie.
