The human resistance, led by John Connor, are about to take down Skynet once and for all. There are 2 separate attacks being held, and the one John Connor is leading is to stop the activation of Skynet's time machine, which means that a Terminator won't be sent back to the past to kill his mother Sarah. To succeed in doing this would mean the end of the war forever, which means humanity can finally go back to rebuilding itself from the ashes. Unfortunately, they are a few minutes too late, so once again, Kyle Reese is sent back in time to protect John's mother. Before he is done teleporting though, he sees someone attack and kill John Connor from behind! As Kyle is drifting back to the past, he begins to see memories that aren't his own, warning him about something called "Genisys." The voice says that Genisys is Skynet, and that they need to stop it from launching to save the future in 2017.
Back in 1984, the old model T-800 appears, but before he can attack anyone, ANOTHER T-800 shows up, leading to a big fight that ends with the newly arriving one being stopped by a bullet from Sarah Connor! Kyle Reese then arrives in the past, and is approached by a cop who turns out to be the shape shifting T-1000! He gets chased to a department store where he is captured by other cops, and tries to explain to them what's going on, but to no avail. One cop does believe him, but of course only after he sees the T-1000 kill his partner and absorb the bullets with no effect! Thankfully for Kyle, Sarah and "Pops" (Sarah's name for her guardian Terminator) show up to save his butt, but Kyle, out of fear, tries to attack him, blowing off one of the doors in their van. Since Kyle is hysterical and will not calm down, Pops is forced to knock him out cold while they continue to escape from a chasing T-1000.
After coming to, Sarah explains to Kyle that Pops was sent back even earlier in time by someone other than John, and after her parents were killed, she was raised by him and taught to be the warrior she is now. She no longer needs saving, but an ally to help her protect what now looks to be an alternate future. After finally disposing of the T-1000 and taking some of its future tech, they are able to use a time machine to go to the future to stop Judgement Day from happening. While Sarah is set on going to 1997, Kyle tells her that they instead need to head to 2017 due to the strange memories he had during his time travel trip, saying that this is the way they will be able to stop Skynet from ever coming online. At first Sarah refuses, but after Pops explains how this could be possible, she reluctantly agrees to do it.
Things get off to a rough start as they wind up being transported in the middle of a busy highway and are immediately arrested. One person who views the footage, an old police detective named O'Brien, knows about them from a brief encounter in 1984 and believes their time travel story when no one else does. After escaping from police custody, they shockingly meet John! At first Sarah is paranoid, asking he prove himself to be who he is. After all, she's seen enough shape shifting Terminators to know this could be a ruse! He proves that is it in fact him, so they make their way to the parking lot when out of nowhere Pops show up and shoots John in the chest! What the hell is this!? Even more shocking than that, John gets up just fine!
John explains that when Kyle saw him getting attacked, it was by the physical form of Skynet, and that his body was infected by nanomachines. Now he is more than man, he is the ultimate combination of man and machine! He has traveled back in time to help build Skynet, and will go through anything to see it succeed. He now wants Sarah and Kyle to join him, that way they can be the rulers over this new world. Shocked and disgusted, both refuse and barely escape from his attack. Now Sarah, Kyle and Pops are at a stash house and have to find a way not just to prevent Skynet from activating, but now killing the man who was supposed to save them from the machines! Can 2 humans and an old model T-800 save the day, or is humanity now doomed to fall under control of the former savior mankind?
HOLY ish YOU GUYS, THIS MOVIE WAS PHENOMENAL!!!!!! I admit, I was skeptical due to the pg-13 rating and the previews making it look like it was going to be an over-reliant on CGI mess, but I was totally wrong! I only have 2 complaints about this movie; 1. I wish the trailers didn't give away the shocking twist of John Connor becoming a Terminator. Had I seen that for the first time in the theater, that would have been the biggest shock in years! Unfortunately, trailers these days ruin everything, but still, what a way to turn the world of Terminator upside down! 2. A little bit of the CGI doesn't look that great, but overall it's almost all well done.
The casting was great in this one. Jai Courtney was awesome as Kyle Reese, and Arnold was his usual awesome self. The best role though had to be Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor. What a great choice, she was so bad ass! The humor in this was fun, and the action was constant and big! Gunshots, explosions, hand to hand combat, vehicle chases, this movie has it all! Plus they still did use a good number of practical effects in this film, so this made me very happy. This was so much better than the abomination that way Salvation, and the way they did this timeline pretty much erases that and part 3. This is supposed to be part of a new trilogy, but with it not doing so well at the box office (at least not in the States, it did really well overseas), who knows if this will actually happen.
Either way though, I say screw the critics who hated on this film. If you are a fan of the franchise, I personally think this film is something you will enjoy. It's a great mix of the things you loved about the original films and tries something a bit different to great success. I hope it does well and we can get another good film out of this. Hopefully they'll all be back!

Been hearing mixed reviews on this. Really glad you and Scott liked it, and I thought the last trailer I saw for it looked awesome. Can't wait to see it!
