While sitting around the campfire sharing scary stories, the head counselor Max decides to share an old urban legend with them. It's the story of a mean, angry old farmer named Madman Marz. He would routinely go into town, drinking and starting fights, just to come home and abuse his wife and daughter as well. One day, Marz snapped and brutally murdered his family with an axe, chopping them to pieces and going to town for a drink still covered in their blood. Once the town folk saw what he did, they attacked him, then hung him from a tree, leaving him for dead. The next day however, no body was found, and nobody has seen him since. The legend has it that should you ever enter his woods and speak his name above a whisper, he will come and murder you the way he murdered his own family.
One of the teens decides to scream his name out loud as a joke, and throws a rock through the window of Madman Marz's old house. He tries to get one of the other girls to stay back with him, afraid of losing her since the camp sessions are coming to a close, but she opts to go back to the cabin and relax instead. Max thanks all the counselors for the job they've done, and tells them to be good as he goes into town for a few things. Unbeknownst to anyone however, is that the sound of his voice has awakened Madman Marz, and one by one, he slowly begins to kill off every member of the camp. Will anyone be able to stop him, or will they all be hacked to bits just like his wife and daughter were that dreadful night?
I almost blind bought this one off Amazon, as a lot of my Instagram friends were raving about it. I randomly stumbled upon it while scrolling through what was new on Amazon Instant Video and added it to my watch later list, so I got around to checking it out yesterday. After giving it a watch, I have to ask, what is the big deal about this movie? If you've seen any "serial killer in the woods" film, you've seen this, and done way better too.
Madman also contains some of the most horribly wooden acting I've ever seen in a film, I mean, it was mind blowing how bad everyone was! Every single character came off as if their dialogue pages were right in front of them, and they were simply reading it verbatim with no emotion whatsoever. Madman Marz also makes the most hilarious noises when he stalks people, which led more to me laughing and not being able to take him seriously than being the least bit intimidated by him. The film barely has anything in the way of story, and all the characters are either stupid, annoying, or boring, so it feels like it drags on forever, despite only being about 80 minutes. Lastly, most of the kills and effects aren't that good, aside from maybe 2, so even that doesn't help this paint by numbers slasher.
Man, what an overhyped piece of garbage this was. If you're curious and just want to watch an 80's slasher, I suggest something other than this. Definitely not worth wasting your time on.

Own it on DVD. Absolute classic. It is also worth a viewing for the movie theme, alone.

Also, not every horror flick is created with the intention of scaring the audience. The kills in this movie were unique and incredible, and the cheesy, hot tub sex scene was absolutely hilarious. This movie had it all, didn't disappoint. Excellent slasher.

I hated it. I don't mind if a movie isn't the most original as long as it's fun or entertaining. This movie was neither of those things.

I love some movies folks hate and hate some others love, that's what it's about. Loving reading both sides here!

the trailer seemed fun to me, but if you are correct... it makes me wonder why people even think they have what it takes to make a film...
