Here we have one of the most iconic movies in science-fiction. If you haven't already seen it, the odds are you aren't a fan of the genre, but just in case, here is your spoiler warning.
If you haven't seen it, I wonder if this is your first day visiting our planet, but here is a brief description anyway. Sarah Connor is the girl next door. Nice, pretty, trying to make her place in the world. What she doesn't know is she will be the mother of a hero who will lead humanity to victory over machines that are going to try to exterminate us. The machines have sent back one of their own to kill her before the lad is born. The humans send back a warrior, Kyle Reese, to protect her. Thus, the battle for the future begins.
This film and its first sequel are easily in my list of ten favourite movies. Linda Hamilton and Michael Bien both give great performances, and Arnie was at his menacing best. Some people may view the dated special effects dubiously, but for me, the unnatural appearance and jerky movements of the machines adds to their creepiness.
Who can forget those memorable lines? 'I'll be back' and 'Come with me if you want to live' are frequently used by people who haven't seen the movie, and often even without the knowledge of were they came from. As some of my exasperated friends will tell you, 'That's what he does! That's all he does!' is one I frequently use, slightly modified to describe myself, after I tell yet another lame joke.
That scene at the police station? No matter how often I watch it (and I have watched it a lot), it still gets my blood pumping. Few cinematic moments have been as effective at showing an unstoppable menace. Just when it seems all hope is lost for our leading lady, the desperate but determined protagonist comes to her rescue.
The Terminator should have launched Biehn, who portrays Reese, to stardom. For reasons I am unaware of, it didn't. He has had a respectable career with roles in movies such as Aliens, The Rock, and Planet Terror, but he never became of the big names in Hollywood. If things had turned out a little differently, he could easily have had the same status as Arnie and Stallone.
Linda Hamilton, of course, does a superb job of playing the frightened but gutsy woman who is reluctantly destined to be the mother of the future. Many of us guys became quite infatuated with her and wished we were the one saving her from certain doom, although I'm sure in those daydreams we hoped for a better end than the one waiting for Reeese.
Enough of my jibber-jabber! Wouldn't you rather be watching the movie? Remember, if it isn't in your collection, the robots win.
Edit: And of course, this one gets an enthusiastic Shard Smiley of Approval.
