Let me start with a little preface as to my mindset before reading this book. I was boarded up with my entire family in a foreign land, our one bedroom basement apartment hardly a fitting dwelling, on the verge of homelessness — the local library held the escape I needed to function on a daily basis, and it was the only entertainment we could afford. I frequented the library, and checked out books often. It was probably my most active reading period in my life. I picked up Pig Island in the horror section, and the first little bit read well, so I checked it out. For the first few weeks in my reading (slow reader), I fell head over heels in love with the book. It terrified me. I was afraid of the dark again. It was truly tantalizing and captivating... for the first half of the book. The latter half was entirely disappointing. I have never been more disappointed in a book and I read all the Twilight novels. This is not coming from an elitist point of view, either. Elitism pisses me off, especially when it comes to creative expression. But this book disappointed me. The first half played like a spooky thriller, with lots to fear and grip you early on — but toward the halfway point, it devolves into a soap opera and quickly disintegrates from then on out. I'd like to pick it up again sometime just to re-read so I can see if I still hate it but god... I was so upset with the way it ended. Such a shame. Then again, some might enjoy it as I did early on, and I say more power to you! But the ending completely dissatisfied me, specifically because the beginning held so much promise. :/

Nice review of the book, I think I'll pass though. Too much time to invest in a novel just to have the end come up short.

This sounded really interesting, so I picked up a copy after reading your review. No idea when I'll get to it (my "To Read" stack is actually about 5 SHELVES), but thanks for the rec!
