Super Hybrid is a charming little story of boy meets car, boy falls in love with car, car eats boy. Let the carnage begin!
You know those squid that can disguise themselves as things like rocks in order to lure in prey? Well, it seems their disguise technology has advanced considerably lately. Now they can disguise themselves as cars and trucks. Apparently they can't disguise themselves as planes because flying squid would just be ridiculous, right?
Well, one of these squids is a reckless driver and gets itself into an accident. Maybe it should have waited for an hour after eating before hitting the roads. It is taken to an impound, where the bulk of the movie takes place. There we meet our protagonists and secondary antagonist. There is the plucky heroine, the abrasive boss, the moron, the 'Surprise! He isn't going to live after all!' guy, and several people whose primary function is to up the body count. They soon find out they are in for a bad night, then comes all the running and the screaming.
Despite the ludicrous premise, this is a fun movie. We get some good kills, but it isn't so sadistic that we feel dirty for watching it, unlike some of the recent torture porn movies. The heroine is a likeable tomboy who isn't a helpless damsel, she has the will and the skill to defend herself. There are a few eye rolling moments. When the mechanics see what is hiding under that hood, it makes you wonder how the police didn't notice that when the squidmobile was upside down in the street. I also kept wondering why the characters just didn't stay in the areas their hunter couldn't reach. The writers should have come up with a reason other than the script calling for it.
Why don't they just leave, you ask? Well, they can't. The boss locked the main doors, then lost the keys. What about the emergency exit? It has been welded shut for security reasons. Wrap your head around that one. Besides, the boss wants to capture the beastie for fame and fortune. Myself, I would sorta prefer the ability to continue breathing over the riches, but I guess that's why I don't have the big bucks and a fancy new coffin.
I guess I give this one a mild recommendation. It is a decent movie, but with some more work it could have been a good one.

I wanted to like this so much more than I did. It wasn't horrible, but definitely not as fun as it could have been.
