This is one of my favorite 'Stephen King based from the books' movies, it's a classic. I started to read the book not a long time ago, so I can't wait to see if it will beat the movie which might be the case because mostly the books are better than the movies, anyhow The Shining will still be one of my best horror movies even if the book will be better (if it's the case).

I used to like this movie. Now, it's still really good. How could it not be with Kubrick at the helm? However, once I finally read King's book . . . Man! I love the book so much more.
I also see King's problem with casting Nicholson. He already looks crazed. There isn't a slow descent. Not on his face. Maybe someone like Warren Beatty or perhaps Roy Scheider would have been a better choice. Shelly Duvall is also too shellshocked to start with. There's no slow descent on her face either. Either Diane Keaton or Jane Fonda for Wendy. Everyone else is fine.
The score is great. The tension. The scares. Just wish there was more of the book in the movie. Especially when it comes to Dick Hallorann. Scatman Crothers is so great as Hallorann.
Still worth watching, regardless. This is exactly my issue with the film. The first time I watched it I wasn't that keen. Years later I read the book which blew me away. The thing is the book has a lot of backstory that gets removed from the film. The key thing is Jack's past with his alcoholic violent father. The idea is like the hotel itself Jack fears his past is coming to haunt him. I also like yourself felt that jack Nicholson played him a bit mad from the start while as I really enjoyed the slow decent into madness and the moment at the end where he temporarily breaks free allowing his son to basically escape showing that it was the hotel. I still need to watch the mini series king did to see if it is good. I heard it does the slow decent part good but the kid is more annoying. I rewatched the film after the book and enjoyed the film a bit more but it just leaves too much out. I've yet to see dr sleep but did read the book when it first came out. Didn't mind it although not as great as the first
