I have no luck with technology. I've had this computer, an Asus laptop, for just over a year and now the last 2 days it's been running hot and when I listen to youtube it skips when I try to do other things along with it. While looking at the task manager (which I had to google how to do because I suck at all of this) it says I'm using around 80% of my memory, so anything I do it makes it slow and skip/robot. It isn't the connection, so it's gotta be the computer. I have no idea what to do other than give up on all technology and live as a luddite away from the rest of the world.
I need 2018 to end.

No need to live as a luddite NDX , lol. The heat issue could be a few things, dust inside the unit...it builds up fast. I open my PC case about twice a year and use compressed air to blow it all out. Could also be that the processor is working too hard if you've almost maxed out your memory. Any programs you don't use that you could get rid of? And, I don't know if you do any of your art using the laptop, but some of the scanning software and editing etc. can be resource hogs and up the temp. Hard to say for sure without bench marking and all, but you could take it to a shop and just have it looked over for anything glaring. Probably even Geek Squad at Best Buy, but I've always had better luck with a shop, not a chain. If nothing else, you could buy a laptop cooler fairly cheap, and they help a lot. My wife uses one on hers. Hope this helps at least a little, good luck with it. BTW, how'd you guys make out in the storm? I know parts of New York got hit really hard, hope you guys came through OK.

Over heating issues, shutting down/slow downs is your CPU hitting its thermal limit "thermal throttling"..
vents around the laptop are probably clogged with dust and hair not allowing any fresh air in - canned air that thing may help with the air flow
Fan not pushing any air out, the fan could have died and isn't releasing the heat from the hardware - this will require you to take it to a shop and replace the fan or cooler - possible to buy a laptop cooler that will push air through it may work but not a fix more of a bandaid
Memory overload causing slowdowns
Internet browsers like firefox or chrome will eat up memory "RAM" like crazy same with design or art programs since you are using a laptop im assuming its using an integrated GPU which piggy backs the cpu to display anything it loves using the ram (memory) - buy some more ram and install yourself or take to a shop to have it installed most laptops take 2 dimm sticks better off buying two new sticks and trashing the old ones
fun fact they call them notebooks because people sued when they called them laptops claiming they would get burns on their legs when the laptop would overheat

Firefox an Chrome is killing it but I don't know what to do otherwise. IE does the same when I used it last night while recording an episode of Gorilla Blood Radio.

Another note (too lazy to hit edit), it's still slow even when it's not overheating. Like now, opening this page, posting these posts, caused Youtube to skip and robot horribly. It's very aggravating and whenever I try to load a page everything gets stuck in skipping for a few seconds.
This only started on Thursday, too.

Maybe an update or something got installed? I don't know, that's weird. Glad it's working better though.

I did a hard shut down on Sunday. I didn't use it at all on Monday. I turned it on today, it went through so sort of resetting, restarted, and has run smoothly ever since. I'll take it.

If that was an update issue... holy crap these OS companies are getting out of control on forcing users to update

Wow man, strange stuff. Have you tried the malware scanner? Its free and might find something, worth a shot. Looking like you may need to reinstall Windows, but that should be a last resort.

I'm gonna see if if there is a fix for this over at Geek Squad. At least one that doesn't require me sending the labtop off to Kentucky. Not happening.
It comes and goes, the keys working, as youcans.

I would have given up and just started putting some cash aside for a new one.
If you have a usb keyboard i would try and plug that in and see if that is having the same issue with the keys not working since it could be a driver issue or a keyboard setting issue...
If the stuttering is happening with online playback it may be the ISP if the stuttering is happening with local playback it might be a driver issue.. the fact that it shuts down is telling me that the systems over heating which could would also cause the thermal throttle causing things to load slow and stutter... If nothing is showing up on as a heavy process then this might be a malicious program running that is hiding and is overworking your PC.. at this time i would recommend you to ask for help pulling off the files you need and doing a fresh install of windows or buying a new hard drive and a new copy of windows
