Has anyone read this book? What are your thoughts on it? Will you read it if you haven't already done so? Synopsis: First published in 1959, Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror. It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a "haunting"; Theodora, his lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powers—and soon it will choose one of them to make its own.

Is this the basis for The Haunting?

I want to say "yes". They actually made this book into a movie twice. Once in 1963 and again in 1999. Last year, it was announced that this was suppose to be made into a tv series for Netflix.

The 1963 movie is a great watch, the 1999 one not so much. And, no, I've never read the book. I need too.

I read that book some time last year. I really enjoyed it, especially that creepy ending. I won't go into any details because I don't want to ruin anything for the people who plan on reading it. But I'll have to go see if I can find the movies now and watch them, especially the 1963 movie.

They have made a series on Netflix called "The Haunting of Hill House" that is suppose to come out on October 12th. Is there anyone here that plans on watching it?

We don't have Netflix, but once the season is over I may see if I can find it somewhere online to watch.

I bought the book today. I can't remember if I ever read it years ago, but I know I definitely saw the movie version. The bookstore salesman said the series is nothing like the book or movie.
Eleanor just got past the gate and is seeing Hill House for the first time. Leave now Eleanor!!!

Yeah, I've watched the show now and I agree. The show is nothing like the book, however, I didn't think the show was all that bad. If you know nothing about the show going in and haven't read the book, you might like the show.

The first season of the series was actually pretty good. They're switching it up with a new story for season two I've read.

I love Shirley Jackson's book. Great writer. I love the '63 movie too. Heck of an adaptation. The Netflix series deviates a lot from this source material, but the essence is there.
The book is so vivid. So haunting, as it were. Very well told. Highly recommend reading. "Some houses are born bad."
