One of my childhood favorites, and it still holds up. "The Poltergeist Curse" is sad to read about. Especially in relation to the two actresses that played the daughters. Nevertheless, a movie well worth seeing if only to honor them.
Certainly has a way of making you laugh and then scaring you the next second. This and two are worth seeing. Three and the remake aren't, in my opinion.
The other controversy around this movie/series is who really directed this first movie: Tobe Hooper or Steven Spielberg.
I could see a case for both, and a lot of Spielberg elements are there. He helped produce this movie as well as came up with the story, I believe. So, it's possible.
There are Hooper elements too. Nothing quite as disturbing as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but if you watch his adaptation of 'Salem's Lot you can tell that that and Poltergeist are similar in the approach.
