myself and queenfreaky are completly obsessed with vampires, We have nt just jumped on the bandwagon we have been genuinly interested in them for many years, and seeing as its quite fashionable, there are many vampire books out now, some of which are pretty good. Of course a lot are aimed at the teenage market, but if you can get past that, the stories themselves are actually good. And of course some are nt aimed at lovestruck teens, you just have to know where to look! Have just finished 'Eternal' by Cynthia Leitich Smith, and the Nightworld Series is also good. Of course there is the infamous Twighlight Saga books, which are amazing and although its easy to dismiss them as silly romantic nonsense for pre pubescent girls, its not!!

As a lover of all things horror, vampires are definitely near the top of the list for me behind werewolves and zombies, lol. I will be honest and say that I have not checked out the Twilight series at all, for just the reasons you mentioned. But, if you say the classification of the series as "kids stuff" is unwarranted, then I may give them a read.
Stephen King has a few excellent short vampire stories. Obviously, there's the novel Salems Lot, but that came from the awesome short story Jerusalems Lot. Then there is One For The Road and The Night Flier. I'm sure he's written others, but these are really good for a quick thrill.

can I just say that the twilight books are amazing. my husband is not a readwer, but these book he is hooked on and has read more then me! they are aimed at the teenage market which annoys me. Yes the vamps are 100 year old teenagers, and the setting is a high school. But if u can distract yourself away from that, the storyline is amazing and very well written.
I also recomend the "sookie stackhouse" series of vampire books which is what the hbo series true blood is based on. very adult, lots of blood and lots of sex!

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread (although it does seem apt when we're talking about the undead! Muahahahahaaa!), but I just wanted to mention the "Necroscope" series of books by Brian Lumley. His vampires are AWESOME! When I grow up, I want to be a Brian Lumley vampire.
I've not read the "Twilight" books either and mainly for the same reasons that a lot of people avoid them. I don't want my vampires to sparkle - I want them to be gnarly mofos! Each to their own though. And, hey, maybe I'm missing something.

Check out THE CHILDREN'S HOUR, by Douglas Clegg. Quite possibly my favorite vampire novel of all time. Very, very creepy.
Also recommended: THE SUMMONING, by Bentley Little. One of the most disturbing Prologues of the last quarter-century.

Thanks for those james - I'll add them to the "To Read" list.
