Just thought i'd update THIS thread. As i mentioned in The Wicker Man poll i did, i generally hate remakes, but Carpenter's The Thing is an absolute great effort. No crappy CGI, great Special FX and Carpenter Directed it perfectly. Theres no trying to make it better than the 51 version, theres no "Im better and can do better" - which you tend to get with remakes. For the life of me i cannot understand why its been remade/re-booted for a second time. Theres no need for the 2011 version at all.

In all fairness, the 2011 version takes place before the version with Kurt Russell in 82, so it's a prequel and not a remake. And, it takes a while, but it does tie in nicely to the 82 movie as it ends. Did it need to be made, no. But, it wasn't horrible. Wasn't great, by a long shot. But, it wasn't horrible. Liked it enough to own it.

I hear ya, and know what you mean. Still, Carpenters version is the best, imo.

Oh, I don't think Carpenter's version will ever be topped. Just an all around great movie.

I do enjoy the 51 version, but Carpenter's remake i one of the best (and also underrated in my opinion) horror films ever. 2011 was just an awful mess that should never have been made.

1951's version is fine. A good film, especially for the time. But John Carpenter blew it out of the water. Just an amazing film.
I still have yet to see the remake, but I'm not going out of my way to do so, either.

The newest version doesn't hold a candle to Carpenters. Wasn't bad, well I liked it anyway, but nowhere close to Carpenters version.

I enjoyed the 1951 and the Carpenter version. The 2011 version just needs to stay in the trash. It's not the worst thing I've ever seen in my life, but I still wouldn't want to ever see it again.

You just hurt me in my heart. I wanted this to be great and it wasn't, but it wasn't horrible...Ok it was pretty much. Happy now?

When an attempt is made at remaking a classic, it better be freaking good. The Thing remake was OK, but it didn't hold a candle to the Carpenter version.
It's tough to beat a classic, which has me wondering about the Evil Dead remake. Campbell and Raimi produced it, so what are they supposed to say?
I'm hoping for the best, and I'm liking what I'm seeing now, but who knows what the actual film will be like? I like to to think it will be great, but I thought that about The Thing remake too.

There were a lot of reasons the prequel didn't work. First off, the cast is unmemorable. Second, it was chock full of non-scary CGI. 3rd, the monster in it was stupid as hell instead of the intelligent creature it was in the Carpenter version. Lastly, they really forced a lot of stuff just to connect it. That part with the ax was just plain stupid.

I really wanted this to not suck, but it did, and badly. It almost felt like the people who made it only watched 5 minutes of the Carpenter version.
