"A young family are visited by ghosts in their home. At first the ghosts appear friendly, moving objects around the house to the amusement of everyone, then they turn nasty and start to terrorise the family before they "kidnap" the youngest daughter. "
I have never seen this movie before, just clips and a photo in a book that just screamed "You need this." When it was on sale for $4, I caved. And I'm glad I did. This was a surprisingly good film. I have no idea how they convinced the MPAA to change this from an R to a PG (PG-13 not existing back in 1982). The last 10 minutes is corpses flying everywhere. Parts of this film actually caught me off guard, I was not expecting it to be so, well, scary. (Yes, I copied this from the LMUW thread.)
This scene. This scene right here.
By today's standards, these graphics are lackluster. But the scene caught me off guard, it was so jarring, that it freaked me out.
Are the second and third movies as good as this? Should I get them as well? Because I really enjoyed this movie.

I love the first one, one of my favorites and definitely the best of the three IMO. The second one is OK, a decent watch but not as good as the first. And the third just felt like they were reaching to make some more money on the title to me. Heather O'Rourke is back, but with a different family. I just felt like not a lot of effort was put into it.

I know the first is a classic, but I've only ever caught bits and pieces of it on television. I have part 2 on VHS in a book box because someone gave it to me for free, but I haven't watched it yet.
