Gonna look for something with an AMD processor chip. Why? I'm told that's better for graphics and art, which is what I need (also, what I had in this machine).

I've never heard anything bad about AMD, but I've never really heard anything bad about Intel processors either so... The most important thing, to me anyway, is the reviews that people that bought the one you want have left. If I had paid more attention to them I would have never gotten my wife her old Acer laptop. That thing was a piece of crap. Didn't work half the time and less than a year in the lid with the screen completely fell off. Don't know if it was just the model I got or what, but I'll never by another Acer computer.
Did a lot of homework on the Toshiba she has now, and that thing is a beast and was a bargain to boot.

Great, and now I'm wary of Acer. I've had a HP and a Toshiba over the last 9 years. I'm leaning towards HP, but the reviews of some of their books are lackluster. Still, I need to make a choice soon.

Never seen a bad review on an HP or Toshiba either, other than it could have had more storage or it could have had more RAM. They seem to be quality and built really well.
It's a big decision really, I mean this will be with you for years. After the Acer my wife had died, I probably spent a month just reading reviews of people that bought the ones I was thinking of getting. Then I whittled it down based on what she wanted to do with it.
The one she has is probably way too much computer for what she does, but it got such good reviews and was at such a good price, I couldn't pass it up. Plus, you can never have too much firepower, it's too little that sucks.

Windows 8 on it or 7? I shouldn't say anything bad about 8, I've never used it. But, I haven't heard much good about it from those that have.

8. Sadly. Don't think I've much of a choice for the price I want to pay. I can't afford a customized machine.

Like I said, I've never used it. You may be able to customize the crap out of it and have it look and act just like what you're used to. You might love it for what you do with the system, who knows?

I cannot do anything on my computer without a new install disk. If anyone has a Vista install disk they can send me I'd appreciate it. in the meantime I definitely need to buy a new computer. There are no doubt about it now I need an upgrade. I think the damage is just going to be too much. In the meantime I will be posting from my phone. so I'll be on less than I'd like to be. Sucks because I really like posting here. Maybe I'll get lucky enough to find something tomorrow right away. At least that's my goal anyway to get something tomorrow. One can hope.
I use my mic to post most of this isn't that cool

Phones are magical these days, Dave. You can do so much with them. You know if they're not taken away from you.

So, I bought the M6-1205DX HP Envy from Best Buy (PC Richards don't even sell it), and I already like it. Windows 8, I don't think it's going to be all that hard to navigate once I get the hang of it. This keyboard, on the other hand, this is going to be a b!tch. It had a number pad, which my last keyboard didn't, so this is really awkward. It feels so strange typing so to the left. Also, I need a bit more pressure on these keys at times. Or I miss a letter I know I punched. I also went through hell to get this, but so far...
I like it.
