It's no secret that Tomas and I are fans of the series of films and production value of the Criterion Collection. For 30 years Criterion has put together a collection of some of the best, influential and strange movies out for us to enjoy, with oodles of special features. Early on they focused on a solid mix of obscure to classic to influential blockbusters to bulk up their catalog. Since, they've chosen more... I don't know how to properly put it, but I wish they would go back to an earlier trend.
What I love about these pieces is that they have put out some amazing films in their collection, some I've loved for many years, and some I've only recently heard of.
Some films that stick out are Seven Samurai, Hard Boiled, Robocop, The Rock, Hard Boiled, This Is Spinal Tap, The Silence of the Lambs, Lord of the Flies, Yojimbo, Carnival of Souls, The Blob, Throne of Blood, Repulsion, Diabolique, M, The Night of the Hunter, Man Bites Dog, Vampyr, Scanners, Eraserhead, Badlands, On The Waterfront (a revived unreleased laserdisc, thankfully), Rashomon, 8½, Traffic, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Straw Dogs, Naked, Lunch, Videodrome, and so on and so on.
It's a shame a lot of the films they released on laserdisc were never re-released on DVD, like Citizen Kane, King Kong, Akira, Invasion of the Body Snatchers '56, The Graduate, It's a Wonderful Life, Blade Runner, any of the Hitchcock they put out, Trainspotting, Supercop, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Jason and the Argonauts (holy crap why?!), The Fisher King, Midnight Cowboy, Carrie, Dr. Strangelove, and... well, the list goes on. Shame that NONE of those are on DVD/BD through Criterion.
But the real question I present to you, what films do you think deserve the Criterion treatment? While watching Carnival Of Souls to kick off the 31 Nights of Halloween, it dawned on me that Night of the Living Dead, the Romero classic deserves to be given the proper treatment. For years, the movie has floated around and I feel never got a complete release. Plus this gives it a chance to get expertly remastered for a much needed Blu-ray release. Best part, not copyright issues to deal with.
So, what films do you think warrant a Criterion like release (or for our UK friends, Eureka!)?

Lots man. There are some really underrated films that could use the redistribution treatment with proper remasters. Let's Scare Jessica To Death being one and Don't Look in the Basement/The Forgotten being another. I'll have to think of some more but there are plenty that deserve it and that I think people would like to see happen. The two I mentioned probably will never happen because Don't Look In The Basement is so low budget and, well, bad...but I love it and can hope.

Man, there really are so many that could qualify. It's kinda tough for me to make too many suggestions seeing that I love to watch mostly trash, but off the top of my head...
I'd say Terminator 2 would be a good choice. It really is a masterpiece of special effects, and they still hold up very well to this day.
Sweet Sweetback's Badass Song because it started the blaxploitation genre.
Scream for reinvigorating the horror genre.
That's all I got for now.

If you want to talk special effects The Thing could easily be on that list.

Speaking of the Thing, how about a John Carpenter collection? I think we can all agree that the man has created some iconic and influential films over the last 35 years, and several of his films could easily be justified for a Criterion release (especially if they were keeping true to their origins with pieces like Robocop and Hard Boiled).
Just think of a set that contained all of this, his 6 early shorts Gorgon, the Space Monster, Gorgo Versus Godzilla, Sorceror from Outer Space, Warrior and the Demon, Terror from Space, and Revenge of the Colossal Beasts and the films Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, The Fog, Escape From New York, The Thing, Christine, Starman, Big Trouble in Little China, Prince of Darkness, They Live, Body Bags, In the Mouth of Madness, Village of the Damned, and Vampires.
Christ, I think I just popped a woody thinking of that set. I'd be willing to drop 2 bills on that set.

Hell, throw in Escape from LA or Elvis just to round out the movies to 15.

I think a more modern one that could fit is Let The Right One In. Such a brilliant vampire film, and just a damn good movie in general.

A film that really deserves a Criterion release is The Network. Holy ish is that movie amazing. And the best part is that it is even more relevant now than it was nearly 40 years ago!

Some of my picks would have to include:
Jacob's Ladder ('90) Toys ('92) Blazing Saddles ('74) John Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy - The Thing, Prince of Darkness, and In the Mouth of Madness Adaptation. ('02) Possession ('81) The Boxer's Omen ('83) Diabel ('72) Jackie Chan's Project A and Project A Part II (since they just released Police Story 1 and 2) Martin ('77) Suspiria ('77) Anomalisa ('15) A Chinese Ghost Story ('87) A Clockwork Orange ('71) Akira ('88) Meet the Feebles ('89) A Coen Brothers Collection (I think there's only Blood Simple and Inside Llewyn Davis in the Criterion Collection right now) Battle Royale ('00) Audition ('00) Better Off Dead... ('85)

The Night set Criterion put out is great. I watched the movie 3 times in a row that night, the original, the work print Night of Anubis and the audii commentary. The Sean Phillips art doesn't hurt either.
Buy it. Buy it now.

I just want a nice Clue BD with a fun gate fold cover that plays off the board game. I think, seeing what Criterion has done for Godzilla, Lone Wolf & Cub, the del Toro trilogy and Zatoichi, they could definitely get it done.
