George R. R. Martin is one of my favourite authors and he certainly knows how to spin a yarn. I just wish that he didn't take quite so long to write stuff. Granted, his books are ridiculously long and rather complex... but that's not the point.
Are there any other Martin fans here? What are your favourite books / characters / scenes?

I'm a little ashamed to say I don't read much anymore. I still love King and Barker and even Koontz at times, but it's very rare to find me with a book in my hand. I listen in the car on the way to and from work, finishing Jerusalem's Lot now. But as for actually reading, not much into it lately. Not even sure what he's written, Game of Thrones? Never even seen an episode.

I need to give his 'THRONES books a chance. I'm just not a fantasy fan.
He has written horror on occasion, though, and it's great stuff -- his short story "The Pear-Shaped Man" (I think I've got the title right) won a Bram Stoker Award, and deservingly so, as it was an extremely creepy tale. He wrote a great rock n' roll horror novel called THE ARMAGEDDON RAG back in the day, and his book FEVRE DREAM is regarded by many as one of the all-time best vampire novels. I do own a copy of that one, but haven't read it yet.

Oh I loooove the A Song of Ice and Fire series by Martin!! I'll admit, it took a few tries for me to really get into it though because he's got SO many characters and things going on in the books, but once I did, I couldn't get enough. I still haven't gotten through the whole series though, I think the furthest I've gotten is right at the beginning of the fourth book, A Feast for Crows. But I've started re-reading the series again because I like to write down quotes from the books. Quote-wise, I'm only on Chapter 4 of the second book ( A Clash of Kings) and I've already got 46 pages in a Word document, full of my favorite quotes/scenes... lol. Ned Stark has always been one of my absolute favorite characters, for his unconditional love of his family and how he clings to honor and justice. And Jon and Arya, simply because I love their relationship and how they treat each other. It's so sweet. {Spoiler}Though the hardest scene I've read so far is the killing of Lady. It actually brings tears to my eyes every time I read it because she didn't deserve to die like that. But I do love how Ned handles it with honor.

I think my favourite character from that series of books is Tyrion Lannister. Not really that honourable, but he definitely has his own code of sorts.
