Amid the media hype and the overreaction(?) to the COVID-19 virus, or coronavirus, it's important to remember that there have been much more severe viruses/diseases that have been faced and overcome.
One of the most deadly that surprisingly didn't garner near the attention that the coronavirus is, was H1N1, or the Swine Flu in 2009 that happened when President Obama was in office.
Here's a chart of some deadly viruses from the past and how the coronavirus stacks up to them.
It's funny, so many people were affected or killed by Swine Flu in 2009, but the media never seemed to make a big deal out of it and glossed over it. Just keep in mind how the media's narrative can affect the way they portray things and the reaction it gets from people that buy into everything the media says.
I'm not saying what's going on isn't serious, far from it. I'm saying that the media uses the way it puts out information to manipulate people and their reactions. Sometimes you have to take things with a grain of salt and read between the lies, er... lines.

But as someone who has diabetes and hypertension last thing I need is catching this thing. I expected schools to be closed for 3 weeks but over a month is maddening. I just hope the necessary stores like Key Food and CVS stay open so I can get more food when needed and my meds when I run out.

I get it man, it's scary. I don't want to catch it either. I just think the media is making it out to be way worse than it actually is compared to other viruses that have come before it. I'm more worried about peoples reactions to it than I am about getting sick.

Yeah, the panic is ridiculous. On top of that, it sparks fearmongering. I do something productive to block out this media attention.

Well, they always make people panic when a new virus/disease pops up. It's tougher now though thanks to the internet making it easy to spread misinformation.

It's crazy here too man, shelves completely cleared out. Like I said, way more worried about peoples reaction to this whole thing than actually getting sick.

I work for NYC government and the majority of our staff have been ordered to work from home until further notice. They set us up so we have e-mail, phone & computer access to the office from home. All meetings are teleconference. It feels strange, it's like NYC & Long Island are becoming ghost towns. The local Stop & Shop is allowing Seniors to have the whole store to themselves from 6am - 7:30 am. That's really early for me, but being a senior with Diabetes and other health conditions, I may just have to do an early morning supply run. I just need a few staples and cat supplies so I won't have to sweat it when the Mayor makes a 'shelter in place' order limiting our movement outside our homes. Be safe everyone, dont let Captain Trips get you down. Good always wins in the end. And endo, I fully agree with your assessment. (((HUGS)))

I'm going to try and hit a few stores the next 2 days because I don't want to be caught unready for this potential lockdown. This is nuts right now, wonder if this will effect CVS, Walgreens, etc.

NDX, I got a notice today from CVS that they will continue to provide service to their customers in addition to providing home delivery.
