Before it came out I was reading so much hype about Jackie Earle Haley playing Freddie and how awesome he was in the role. Now, I don't think anyone could have done it better than Robert Englund, and I understand that Haley wasn't trying to outdo Englund, but rather put his own spin on the Freddy character... but he just didn't do it for me. This was a remake I just felt added nothing to the original. When I thought we were going to get this long back story on Freddy, and what he had done and how he became what he is, I was pumped. But, they glossed over the one thing they could have done to improve on the original, to me anyway. I don't hate it, I guess. But, could've been better.

I hear you on that. I mean, it did bring it up a bit more than the original film did, but it wasn't exactly anything huge that made a big impact.

New one. Eh. Wasn't too scary. Again, the effects of everything were better due to technology. But. Freddy sucked. 84' scared, and still scares me. Such a classic.

Agreed. When the new one was getting ready to release, the commercials made Jackie Earle Haley's version of Freddie seem really terrifying, but when watching the actual movie I thought Englund really did it better.
Maybe because I just love the ones with Englund, but overall, I felt the remake just wasn't on the level of the original, all the way around. Original all the way for me.

Having seen the original in theaters a few years back, it's got some moments that make you laugh but it also has some straight up scary moments that stick with you. Love it.

I still like the remake, and would rather watch it over 5-7 any day.

Original. The remake never stood a chance. Not the way the studio made it.
Could have updated it better and put some twists and turns in it that would have taken the original fans off guard. Could have gotten actors that actually cared about being in a horror remake like this instead of using this as a jumping off point to start their career.
I like Jackie Earle Haley as an actor, very much so, and if there were way more practical effects throughout the remake, especially with his make-up, I would have felt he could have really delivered. He did as Rorschach in Watchmen, and his face wasn't always seen in that one. Still . . .
Maybe Michael Rooker would have been a better choice. Or even Doug Jones.
I want another Nightmare movie. To make up for the remake.

The remake is fine, but doesn't compare to the original. Caught it for a midnight viewing and had a great time with it. England just has an air around him, he just has the charisma that draws you in, even if the character that is a psychotic child murdering dream demon.

The original by far! The original is one of the best slasher films from the 1980s out there! The remake is not nearly as bad as I expected, but I am still glad I did not spend any money to see that one. Robert Englund is the perfect cast for Freddy Krueger, and it just does not work for somebody else playing that role, in not just my opinion.

My cousin CJ Strawn was the Production designer on all of the nightmare sagas, we communicated through phone and letters but she lived in california and it was hard getting our families together, she died in a plane crash in 2013.

I just can't bring myself to watch it because of the terrible make-up, it detracts from taking the guy seriously as Freddy.
