For the first time ever, I got one Sunday that crippled my PC. The Live Security Platinum virus got on my PC and it was over.
Couldn't launch my AV, Malewarebits, CCleaner nothing. Had to get on my wifes laptop to find a walkthrough of how to get rid of this. And even after I removed it, so many files and programs were damaged I had to re-install Windows.
I don't know how I got it, but it took over in an instant. It's a bogus security program that installs the virus and removes or debilitates anything on your PC that can try to remove it. Then you get the popup that your security is at risk, no ish, and to send them 89.99 for the program to remove the virus which I'm sure they don't even have, or have no intention of sending you.
Rough one. Never had any malware or anything that what I have couldn't touch. So, Microsoft Security Essentials is out, and I'm back to Avast.
Careful with this one guys and gals.
EDIT: Forgot to add, that the virus also attacks your ability to just reinstall Windows. No way to do it at all while infected, the virus needs to be removed before you reinstall. So, be prepared to have a friend on a clean PC walk you through it if you don't have another means to get online.

I had this a few times pop up, and one time it destroyed my computer's HD back in December of 2009. I had to buy and install a brand new HDD. And I lost a lot of files over it. I never got back a working .pdf reader, Microsoft Word (or any other program from there for that matter), etc. Had to reDL all my ish. It sucked man. SUCKED.

It sucked big time here too. Get Foxit reader for a good PDF reader that doesn't bug the piss out of you like Adobe's does.

I had a pretty interesting scare the other day. I was having an issue with a Microsoft program on my laptop. Googled "Microsoft Support Phone Number" to try and get in touch with Microsoft. Found what I THOUGHT was their phone number, called, and without paying attention to the fact that they said their true name (They apparently pretend to be Microsoft), gave them remote access to my laptop for about 20 minutes. Turns out they aren't Microsoft and tend to scam the hell out of many people. Never EVER trust them, the website for them is mytechgurus.com and obviously the company name is My Tech Gurus. They are a huge middle-eastern scam company and will vehemently deny the fact if you call them out on it. Be warned!

So, in light of the virus I had and what hoffman posted, it got me thinking about what the best free anti virus software is. I don't think anyone should have to pay for anti virus software when there are so many free ones out there.
So, what do you use? I personally am back to Microsoft Security Essentials, just for ease of use and the non intrusiveness. Curious as to what you guys use.
