I've decided to go through the Metallica discog on my phone when traveling, and about half way through Kill 'em All, and it just doesn't feel as good as it once did to listen to that. I'm uncomfortable with James' voice from that time. That's the only album, too. I still love some of the songs, but I've grown so accustomed to his sound now, it's not as fun to listen to KEA now.

They sounded so raw back then, it could almost be two different bands. I definitely know what you mean about his vocals. I listen sometimes and am amazed it's the same guy. I prefer his voice now too.

I do think it was also the production. A lot of echo in that first album that distorts his voice to a point. They really cleaned it up and made him sound good from Ride The Lightning on. Ride is still my favorite album, followed by Death Magnetic and ...And Justice For All.

Huh, surprised that you rank DM so high. I love it and it's one of my favorites, but a lot of people bash it and say it sounds like they were trying too hard. Ride is definitely great, and it's nice to see them playing more from that one live lately.
