Hammer Studios was a London based production company that did their own take on the classic Universal Studio monster flicks. Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing were often the stars of the Hammer films, but other notable actors were also featured including the late, legendary Ingrid Pitt. From Frankenstein to Dracula to The Mummy, Hammer Studios covered them all. Great info here: www.hammerfilms.com/No classic horror film discussion is complete without discussing the great films Hammer Studios put out in the 50's and 60's. Here's a clip from Hammers Dracula A.D. 1972:

I remeber staying up late and waiting for my parents to go to bed, then sneaking back down to watch re runs of the hammer classics that were on in the early hours of the morning. any vampire one was my first choice, followed by the bride of frankinstien. dated now, but still watchable

That is the rare thing with hammer, it is still watchable, which I think is part of the magic

Agreed. All of the films they did, albeit cheesy, are still very watchable. Would love to find out if there is some sort of box set available with all the films. That would be nice to have on Halloween night.

I still watch the old Hamer films I have on tape. Lee doesn't make for a half bad Dracula, or Frankensteins monster for that matter.

This studio and Amicus are definitely giants in the horror genre. At least they were. However short of a time that was. Even though they did release other genre movies, I believe.
Anyway, Hammer films are fun and most certainly atmospheric. Mel Brooks' Dracula: Dead and Loving It pays homage to this studio as does a few episodes of Steve Coogan's Dr. Terrible's House of Horrors. Hammer even had a TV show that was fairly decent, actually called Hammer House of Horrors. Especially the Peter Cushing episode.
It's because of Hammer and Amicus I became aware of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Two wonderful actors more than just Star Wars characters.
Now, Hammer Studios had a lot to live up to in regards to the old Universal monster movies, but I think they did a decent enough job. I will say, I do prefer Hammer's first Mummy movie over Universal's first Mummy movie.

I love Hammer and Amicus. Hammer was great with the monster movies for sure and I liked their take on the originals too. Loved Amicus for the anthologies they would put out, I have a bunch of them. Not every story in every movie is a winner, but for the most part all of them are pretty good. My two favorites are Tales from the Crypt, and The Vault of Horror but even the lesser known and less popular ones like Torture Garden and Tales that Witness Madness are decent movies
