Everyone knows the segment from Creepshow, The Crate. It's always been one of my favorites from the movie. I'm a pretty big King fan, been reading him for a long time and he's my favorite author. I always thought the story The Crate was written exclusively for Creepshow, both the movie and the comic book. Tonight online I found the actual story by King that was either written before the movie was conceived, or is the original story meant for the movie, but then heavily edited. Either way, it was a really cool find, and a great read. horrorstoriesvault.blogspot.com/2009/07/stephen-king-crate.html

Wow . . . ya know, I'm pretty sure I never knew that the story wasn't an original written for CREEPSHOW. That's awesome. "The Crate" has always been my favorite segment from either movie as well.

Long ago I was reading an anthology. I use to really like anthologies and read a lot of them. In this one, there was a short story called 'The Crate' by someone named Stephen King. I was not familiar with the name. I read it and it knocked my socks off. I knew that this guy 'got it'; he understood the horror genre and what it means. There was no exploration of the inner turmoil caused by modern day life or the exploration of one's deepest feelings and what they mean in contrast with contemporary society or the meaning of existence—you know, that kind of slop. This was about getting scared out of your socks. This guy got it. The story was written so very expertly, on a skill level I didn't see a lot in the anthologies I read. This was my introduction to Stephen King, the first of his works that I read followed by so very many more. If all you know of this story is the horrible adaptation in the film 'Creepshow', you don't know the 'real' story. The film adaptation was, in fact, a parody of the story, a surprise since, I believe, King himself wrote the screenplay. Find the short story and see for yourself.

Not sure how he had never heard of Stephen King. The greatest and probably most well known author in existence...
