That's awesome man. Cheap and easy to do, and with no actual shelf there, no dust build up on any empty spots, not that you'd have any, lol.
I like that idea a lot! May try that myself.
BTW, drilling a hole in the horizontal piece of wood before putting the nails in will eliminate the splitting.

I might modify a little because a second piece of wood cut to fit behind the front piece would make me feel more comfortable.
Now, what to do about my books...
