This is a British film from 1936, based on the character of Sweeney Todd, who first appeared in Penny Dreadful novels. The main actor is the wonderfully named Tod Slaughter. Slaughter's acting style was purposefully over the top, as it belonged to a stage tradition of Victorian "blood-and-thunder" melodramas, that weren't designed for elite theatergoers, but for popular entertainment. He is a link to a lost age.

This is definitely my favorite of the Sweeney Todd movies, or of the ones I have seen! I am still yet to see the silent versions from the 1920s on back, though. The ending is so epic and timeless!
