"Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark" is a supernatural horror film based on an old children's book series, taking place during Halloween of 1969 in a small Pennsylvania town. It starts with a group of kids getting back at a group of bullies, tricking them into thinking they are stealing a bag of candy, but it is a bag of human waste that accidentally gets all over the inside of their car, causing the driver to panic as he accidentally drives into a neighbor's fence. The bullies then chase the kids to a nearby drive in movie theater, only to get escorted back out of there. The kids meet up with a young man who claims to be following an entourage, but he is really on the run, dodging a draft to join the Army. They find themselves at an old haunted house that is boarded off by the law, and is said to have had a crazy psychotic lady once living there. They find a book of stories the lady wrote while she still lived there and too it with them. After that, new stories appear in the book, about both them and people they know, then the stories begin to happen in real life. The film is very creative and very well done in the styles of children's scary stories from the 1960s and 1970s, and are also very artsy. There is also plenty of good drama, dialogue, and well developed characters. There is also a lot of great action, suspense, twists, turns, and eye opening scenes. The costumes, make up, scenery, and visual fx are also very well done as well. This is probably one of the better American horror films from recent years. It should definitely appeal to those into the old fashioned children's scary stories and maybe to those into E.C. Comics and Grimm's Ghost Stories as well.
