"Murders in the Rue Morgue is a 1932 horror film, loosely based on Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The Murders in the Rue Morgue". Bela Lugosi (one year after his performance as Dracula) portrays a lunatic scientist who abducts women and injects them with blood from his ill-tempered caged ape. Karl Freund's cinematography and Robert Florey's direction have been praised by critics and characterized as "expressionistic" by Leonard Maltin.[2] Despite the film being pre-Code, violent sequences prompted Universal to cut its running time from 80 minutes to 61 minutes." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murders_in_the_Rue_Morgue_%281932_film%29Pretty good movie. I'm a big Lugosi fan, so I've liked this for a long time. But, even if you've only seen him in Dracula, this is a good watch.

That is a significant amount of cut footage. I guess it was way too shocking for audiences back then.

It is. It would be awesome to find it somewhere uncut, if it even exists. I wonder what was done with the footage? It's funny because the movie wasn't very well received when it came out, almost being a box office flop. Kinda wonder had the footage stayed in, if it might not have done better just from people wanting to see what all the fuss was about, lol. Most critics today praise it, and it has become pretty much a cult classic.

It would be kind of funny in a messed up sort of way if someone had it in a basement somewhere. But it's probably long gone.

Yeah, I'm sure they tossed it. Who would have thought back then that people would love to see that stuff today, lol.

Shame that the footage is probably lost forever. I'd certainly be interested in knowing what was too shocking for that time.

The things we've seen have made us quite numb to violence. We're a lot more jaded these days compared to audiences then. I remember watching Peeping Tom and wondering why people hated that movie so much back then, but today it's considered a classic.
