You and your companions have just survived the crash of a small plane. Both the pilot and co-pilot were killed in the crash. It is mid-January, and you are in Northern Canada. The Daily temperature is 25 below zero, and the night time temperature in 40 below zero. There is snow on the ground, and the countryside is wooded with several creaks criss-crossing the area. The nearest town is 20 miles away. You are all dressed in city clothes appropriate for an outdoor party. Your group of survivors managed to salvage the following items:
A ball of steel wool. A small ax. A Loaded .45-caliber pistol. Can of Crisco shortening. Extra shirt and pants for each survivor. A sectional air map made of plastic. A compass. Cigarette lighter (without fluid). iPod Shuffle. Nail cutter. Pens/Pencils. Newspapers (one per person). 20 x 20 ft. piece of heavy-duty canvas. One quart of hydrogen peroxide. Family sized chocolate bars/water (one per person) Mirror. Aspirin. Nintendo Wii. Towel. Toothbrush. Lotion. Shampoo.
Your task as a group is to SELECT ONLY 12 ITEMS in order of importance for your survival. List the uses for each.
So, the question I ask you, my fellow survivors, what do we take and why? I already have an idea on 3 mandatory items we must take with us in order to at least attempt to keep warm. But what would YOU take first and why?
(I found this game some time last year at work and meant to post it then but lost the damn sheet and completely forgot about it until I found the printout again a few days ago).

First three things I would think to take would be the gun, for protection. Then the shortening and the lighter because I think you could burn the shortening or use it as fuel for the lighter. If that worked, fire is taken care of. 4th thing I would take is the large piece of canvas to try to make some sort of shelter out of. I guess the ax and newspaper to aid in the starting of a fire. Have to think on more.

Well, since no one else is going to...
I'd set up camp overnight to get ready for a long hick in the morning it order to find civilization. I'd make sure to save the food and water for the next day because you don't know where you might find any game to hunt in that temperature. I'd have people double up their clothing and use half the newspapers to stuff in their jackets to keep themselves even warmer (it captures escaping body heat, allowing you to stay warmer than without it).
I woulds then have people search for whatever dry and dead wood they could find, something that can catch a spark and generate heat. I'd use the lighter and steel wool to spark the fire. Steel wool lights up like paper, but lasts a little longer. You use the sparks from the empty lighter (or if you can, the lithium battery connections from the mp3 player) to light up the steel wool to create a fire. You hang the tarp over several branches and partially over the fire to capture the heat it gives off. Make sure you have someone on watch to keep the fire going at all times. Steel wool is limited. Once you capture the heat, you can get some much needed rest.
That is how I would start this venture to safety.

Good idea using the newspaper in clothing for extra warmth. I guess I'd tag along with you since you'd probably last longer than I would, lol.
