It's a film I've wanted to see for years but wasn't sure if I'd like it.
Sadly I was kind of right. Don't get me wrong the effects are really good. Actually some of the stuff shot looks like it could have came out today. Also really nice to learn that a lot of the effects where practical rather than CGI. I don't mind CGI but feel like we rely too much on it sometimes, e.g. horror films using cgi blood when practical 99 percent of the time looks far better. I also get that a lot of these effects where new and that the film influenced a lot of other films.
My issue with the film is it felt like the effects was the main part and so there's a lot of scenes that feel dragged out to further showcase the effects. I don't mind slower films, but I felt a lot of the scenes could have been cut and still had the same effect. The whole plot of a machine/A.I going rouge is interesting, and it is something that people today do wonder about and even worry about. It was kind of the main point in a film I watched the other month, Ex Machina. However it doesn't do a lot with it because it spent most time just showing off the effects, at least for me.
The ending is also weird, a psychedelic colour scene leads to a weird ending. I've read some explanations, although to be honest it was a bit too experimental/art house for me. Like I said it just felt like a film there to show off what they can do, and the plot got left behind.
Are they any fans on here? Maybe I just didn't get it.

I watch this movie practically every year here for Sci-fi September and I still don't understand it. I get that a lot of it is symbolism and it's Kubrick and from '68, so it's going to be trippy and out there at times, but I just have never fully understood it.
As you said, some of the visuals and effects are great, and I do like the movie overall, but I'm still left scratching my head every time it ends.

I remember seeing the last 20 or so minutes of this in a film class, and it was so boring I almost fell asleep. I couldn't imagine trying to sit through the whole thing.
