So, I've always heard of this film, but never had a chance to see it. Until today. Thanks to TCM, I got to sit through an amazing sci-fi/horror flick of epic proportions. A great story that really fit the era, and I'm glad I got to see it today. I think this will have to go on the to be purchased pile. A nice, ominous ending, too, that could be tied to other various nuke age stories.
Next, at 6 PM, I get to finally see Forbidden Planet!

Them is a really good movie. Loved it since I was a kid. I pretty much like all the atomic age films, but this is definitely at the top of the list. Let me know what you think of Forbidden Planet after you watch it. We saw it recently too.

I saw this movie when I was a kid - loved it then and still have a nostalgic fondness for it. This was the era where they were cranking out Science Fiction/Horror flicks that capitalized on people's fears about atomic warfare. We knew our Government did some testing in the desert and there was a lot of speculation about what the effects of exposure to radiation released into the atmosphere would do to life on Earth. Even Japan, which had first hand knowledge of the destruction caused by the Atom bomb, was making movies where creatures became giants wreaking havoc on mankind. Apparently, it was decided that creatures would grow rather than become miniaturized. B movie king, Ed Wood, found a lot of inspiration in the Atomic Age and made some of his classic stinkers that we love so much based on this premise - think Plan 9 from Outer Space and Bride of the Atom aka Bride of the Monster starring his friend and meal ticket Bela Lugosi.

It makes me want to find a few Godzilla movies and watch them. But I only have the 1998 US made film (and while I love it, not what I want to see right now).

I've only ever seen this one once, but I love this movie. It's been awhile too, but I definitely need to get this one on DVD someday. James Whitmore. Edmund Gwenn. Some people may find this hokey, but it's actually very thought provoking. As is Forbidden Planet and The Incredible Shrinking Man.
