This is a clip from the film version of a popular British comedy series from the 1960s/70s. The film was cruder than the series. It's about two rag and bone men, a son who dreams of a better life, and his manipulative father. It's great situation comedy and was well written, but the setting is rather depressing. There was a US version called Sanford and Son. But it seems very different in style.

The old man Steptoe character really has horrible manners, I've no idea why I shared this with you haha. The humour in the TV series isn't as crude.

Looks depressing, so did Sanford and Son, so it figures it was based on this. The clip was funny though.

Well I watched it again, and enjoyed it. But I don't think you could watch many at a time without becoming a but miserable.
It could probably work as a play couldn't it, as it is basically set in one room, with minimum action.

There was another show here from the 70's called Good Times. It was set in Chicago I think, and about a family that lived in the ghetto. It was part funny and part drama with the family dealing with everyday things people might experience in that situation.
I liked all of the characters and one of the sons on the show, Jimmie Walker, got really popular with his catch phrase "Dynomite!" But, it was also very depressing to watch, even the episodes where the message was with family and love you could overcome anything. I stall always found it sad and depressing. But, I found the 70's sad and depressing in my memories for some reason, so maybe that played into it.

This is the opening to the second Steptoe and Son film, Steptoe and Son Ride Again. It probably belongs on a horror site, did people in the 1970s really go to watch this to be cheered up? Old Man Steptoe is a true horror character.
