This post contains spoilers for seasons 1 and 2 of the MTV "Scream" showSeason 1 of Scream is my personal favorite of the 2 seasons (season 3 is its own thing) when it comes to the murder mystery aspect. With season 2, while I liked a lot of the character drama stuff more, the murder mystery part felt like more of an afterthought, especially when so many characters were obvious red herrings and the actual killer ended up being the guy who I thought would be it in season 1 anyway.
The first season absolutely nailed this aspect in a few key ways. For one, the character who is revealed to be the killer isn't even introduced until the second episode, which can easily detour many people from thinking it's that character. After all, it's generally someone who's introduced early on (Scooby Doo rules) or in the first episode. Secondly, the killer is a woman, and because there are just statistically less serial killer women (both in real life and in fiction), it seems less likely that Ghostface would be a woman, just on a statistics level.
She's also mostly a background character for most of the season and will straight up not appear for full episodes, so you kind of forget about her. She feels more like support for the rest of the cast and less like a possibility. It's not even until the last 2 episodes where most people start to realize she could be it. Even then, Kieran (who wound up being Ghostface in season 2 anyways) seems way more likely of a suspect.
Overall I think the character writing (aside from a few plot holes with Maggie's backstory) in season 2 was far better (especially with all the development Audrey goes through in that season), but season 1 absolutely nailed the mystery aspect.

I've never seen an episode of the series, but I'd give it a shot if I found it somewhere streaming for free. Nice review!

Yeah, when we ditched cable we kind of purged a lot of stuff in an effort to cut back on so many things we were paying for that we didn't watch enough to get our money worth. The only pay streams we use are basic Hulu and Philo. Everything else is free stuff. Tons of great stuff out there, especially for a horror fan.
Long story short, thanks, but I don't have Netflix. It'll pop up somewhere at some point.

I will. Your review made it sound worth watching, and I like the movies, so I'd definitely give it a shot.
