"The Card Player" is a very unique and different kind of thriller. When a British tourist is kidnapped, lawman John Brennan heads to Rome to investigate -- and falls into the web of a devious serial killer known as "the card player." Linking up with the police via webcam, the murderer engages the officers in a grotesque game of video poker. If they win, the victim is freed; if they lose, they'll watch the victim die. Italian detective Anna Mari joins Brennan as they try to find the killer before the final card is played. They also find a young guy who is a natural at video poker and who is able to beat the card player. After he beats the card player to save a young abducted girl's life, he then gets led to a shack with two doors and a note to choose which door to enter before the girl who led him there gets shot from a distant bullet nobody can see where it came from, then told to make his choice by a distant voice that could be coming from anywhere. There are lots of twists, turns, and eye openers throughout the whole film. The drama and dialogue is also very well done with very well developed characters. The ending is also very eye opening with a bit of a surprise on who the card player turns out to be. Those into murder mysteries, Italian giallo, Dario Argento, etc. should not be disappointed with this one.
